He was never a legitimate, bona fide New Yorker but more “the shame of Queens.” When he crossed the East River with suitcases of Fred’s cash to make his mark in Manhattan, it turned out to be a more of stain on the City than anything that natives would laud. I remember Spy Magazine routinely referred to him as “the small-fingered vulgarian” which was very apropos.
